About W. A. Sherman Company

The W.A. Sherman Company is an Orange County and Central Virginia provider of heating, air conditioning, electrical, plumbing, and water treatment services.

Rick Sherman holds Virginia State Licenses in Electrical, Plumbing, Heating and Ventilation. He also holds a Professional Engineers license from the Commonwealth of Virginia. He is a North American Technician Excellence [NATE] certified in the areas of Air Conditioning and Heat Pumps. He has licenses to handle freon from RSES. Rick is a certified professional from the Building Performance Institute [BPI] for Building Analysis. Rick is licensed in Virginia as Backflow Prevention Device Worker.
Company History

In 1919 Welford A. Sherman, Sr. after returning from World War I started the company as an electrical company installing DELCO light systems. The DELCO light system was a battery operated lighting system for houses. Soon the company was asked to expand into plumbing and heating.

In 1927 the company partnered with John Norris and Lennox Industries to sell an electrically operated oil furnace. WA Sherman is the second oldest Lennox dealer on the East Coast.

After the Second World War, W.A. Sherman Jr., returned to the company business as a partner in 1946. As an industrial engineering graduate from Virginia Tech he headed the electrical side of the business.

After the Korean War, Fred Sherman Sr., having a degree in Mechanical Engineering from Virginia Tech returned in 1952 to help run the business with his brother Welford.

The founder W.A. Sherman Sr. sold the business to his son, Welford, in 1950.

In 1981 Rick Sherman returned from a 3 year US Army commitment to join WA Sherman Company. Rick graduated from Virginia Military Institute in 1978 with a degree in Civil Engineering. Rick passed his EIT in 1981 from the State of Virginia and in 1987 passed his Professional Engineering test and license from Virginia.

In 1984 Welford retired from the business and sold his interest to Rick. He remained as a consultant until his full retirement in 1987.

In 1987 Ben Sherman joined the company after graduating from East Carolina University. Ben was in charge of sales until June 2010.

In 2008 the business was sold to Lader Acquisitions. When it was sold the business had gross sales of over 3 million dollars annually.

In 2013 Fred and Rick purchased the business back and are in the process of reorganization.

Fred Sherman graduated from Virginia Tech in 1951 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. After a tour in the Army Signal Corp he has worked in the business for over 60 years. Serving as a Corporate officer and managing owner.
